Looking for a cash machine nearby? Planning to avoid the toilet queue at Starbucks by running to the next one? It’s only two minutes away!

CityMaps was launched in 2011 and, unlike other online mapping projects, it offers a visual map of big brands around New York, San Francisco and Austin with more cities coming soon.

Unfortunately, you will have a hard time finding your favourite local pub, coffee shop or health-food store on the map but, as the saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words” and these maps clearly show the visual tapestry of big brands on the streets and their strategies of distribution and market expansion (if you start counting the green circles around Central Park, you are in for a good half-hour of fun).

It will be very interesting to compare the map of New York with other major cities around the world when they become available. Perhaps even more interesting will be the comparison to be made with the distribution of brand outlets across smaller cities.

I am curious to see what the map of London will look like. I can already picture a beautiful pattern full of EAT locales!
