BT To Broadcast The Premier League

British Telecom has secured the live broadcast rights to the 2013-14 and 2015-16 seasons of the Premier League for subscribers of their BT Vision IPTV service.

Although Sky were able to purchase five of the seven broadcast packages, the two that BT have grants them first-pick of 18 matches, including the opening match of the season, and will have to a total of 38 live matches throughout the season.

BT plan to carry their football coverage on a brand new channel with interactive elements built in to extend and enhance the viewer experience.

Being the only broadcaster alongside Sky to have access to live match coverage puts BT in a really strong position as a content provider and means that they can continue to diversify their offer in the face of converging platforms and emerging competitors.

I’ll be interested to see what form the ‘interactive’ elements end up taking and whether BT can leverage these interactions to amplify their message and attract new customers.
