User-uploaded video mega-site YouTube has announced its plans to launch a new platform in order to make the leap comfortably from computer screens to television screens. YouTube are calling it ‘Leanback’ and have explained that it’s current mission brief is to broaden the time that users spend accessing their content from its current average of 15 minutes up to 5 hours. They also acknowledge that consumers are increasingly levelling an expectation to be able to access video content across a range of different media, so they are equipping Leanback to be mobile-ready as well as through IPTV and online. Now that Project Canvas is making progress here in the UK it looks like YouTube is also making a play for dominance in the ‘one channel’ future thats being shaped around the rapidly evolving viewing needs of Audience 2.0.
